NetLoan — Linking NetAsset Assets to a NetLoan Loan Record
Overview
This article explains how to configure a custom field in NetAsset that links NetAsset Asset records to a NetLoan Loan record. The configuration involves creating a subtab on the NetLoan Loan record and a custom List/Record field on the NetAsset Asset record. Once configured, any NetAsset Asset records can be associated with a NetLoan Loan record, and those assets will appear on the loan's dedicated subtab for easy reference.
This is a one-time setup performed by a NetSuite Administrator. End users can begin linking NetAsset Assets to NetLoan Loans immediately after setup is complete.
Prerequisites
- NetSuite Administrator role (required to create custom fields and subtab).
- Both the NetAsset and NetLoan bundles are installed and licensed in the same NetSuite account.
Setup Options
This setup has two parts: creating a subtab on the NetLoan Loan record, and creating a custom field on the NetAsset Asset record.
Part 1: Create a Subtab on the NetLoan Loan Record
Top navigation: Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Record Types
1. Navigate to Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Record Types.
2. Locate and click into the NetLoan Loan record type.
3. Click the Subtabs subtab.
4. Enter the label Related NetAsset Assets (or your preferred name) and click OK to add the subtab.
5. Click Save.
Part 2: Create a Custom Field on the NetAsset Asset Record
Top navigation: Customization > Lists, Records, & Fields > Record Types
1. Go to the NetAsset - Add Custom Fields article and follow the instructions under section "Add field to NetAsset Record" to create a custom field on the NetAsset Asset Record and to apply the custom field to the preferred NetAsset form. Refer to the below tables and screenshots for guidance on the custom field setup.

Use Case: Linking a NetAsset Asset to a NetLoan Loan Record
Once setup is complete, users can associate any NetAsset Asset with a NetLoan Loan record by populating the NetLoan Loan Reference field on the Asset record.
1. Navigate to the NetAsset Asset record you want to link and click Edit. This can be a new asset or an existing one.
2. Locate the NetLoan Loan Reference field and select the appropriate NetLoan Loan record.
3. Click Save.
4. Navigate to the associated NetLoan Loan record. Under the Related NetAsset Assets subtab, the linked asset will now appear.
Considerations
- Multiple NetAsset Assets can be linked to the same NetLoan Loan record. Each asset is linked individually by populating the NetLoan Loan Reference field on that asset's record.
- The Related NetAsset Assets subtab on the Loan record is read-only — assets cannot be linked or unlinked directly from the NetLoan Loan record. All changes must be made on the individual NetAsset Asset record.
- This configuration uses native NetSuite custom field functionality and does not require any scripting or additional bundle installation beyond NetAsset and NetLoan.
