SSEO - Phone Number Formatting in SuperSync for Outlook

When creating NetSuite records through SuperSync for Outlook, you may notice that phone numbers appear in NetSuite without US-style formatting. For example:

8135551234

instead of

(813) 555-1234

This article explains why this occurs and what to expect when using phone number fields with SuperSync.

How NetSuite Formats Phone Numbers

NetSuite automatically formats phone numbers only when they are typed directly into NetSuite’s browser interface.
For US accounts, NetSuite may automatically display a 10-digit phone number in the following style:

(813) 555 1234

However, this formatting happens only in the NetSuite UI. It does not occur when phone numbers are submitted through integrations or APIs.

Why SuperSync Shows Numbers Without Formatting

SuperSync sends phone numbers to NetSuite as plain text values.
Because the submission occurs through the API rather than the NetSuite UI:

  • NetSuite does not apply US formatting automatically

  • NetSuite stores the number exactly as provided

  • No parentheses, spaces, or hyphens are added

This is expected behavior for all NetSuite integrations and is not specific to SuperSync.

Global Usage Consideration

SuperSync is used by customers worldwide.
Because phone number formatting varies by region, the add-in does not enforce any country-specific formatting such as:

  • US formatting (XXX) XXX XXXX

  • International prefixes

  • Country-specific spacing or punctuation

The add-in passes phone numbers as-entered so they remain compatible with all NetSuite regional configurations.

What You Can Do Today

If you prefer formatted phone numbers inside NetSuite:

  1. Create the record using SuperSync.

  2. Edit the phone field directly in NetSuite’s UI.

  3. NetSuite will apply formatting according to your account’s locale rules.
